Why do birds dig holes in the dirt?

Birds commonly engage in the behavior of excavating holes in the ground. According to researchers, this

is a fundamental instinct of birds. And there's a very clear reason why they do this. Birds had to fend for

themselves and obtain food before they were tamed. Finding food was simple and straightforward to do in the

dirt. Therefore, for birds, scratching and pecking at locations on the ground comes naturally and

instinctively, much like flight. Although it's in their nature to dig holes in the ground in search of food, there are other

causes as well. In order to establish a cozy and secure area to deposit their eggs, birds will dig holes in the ground.
